Service

Concrete Flooring, Grinding & Polishing in Cape Town

From new concrete floors to improving an existing surface, we offer installation, grinding and polishing. We assess what is already on site and discuss the preparation and finish appropriate to your project.

In short

This service covers three related things: installing a new concrete floor, grinding an existing surface, and polishing concrete. We offer each in Cape Town and the Western Cape. Suitability depends on the actual surface, so we assess what is already on site before proposing preparation and a finish.

Options

Finishes and systems

Each option suits different spaces and appearances. Gloss level, decorative effect and slip resistance are separate considerations, not interchangeable.

New concrete floor installation

Placing and finishing a new concrete floor where one is being created as part of the project.

Concrete grinding

Mechanical grinding to level, clean or prepare a concrete surface, including as groundwork for a coating or finish.

Concrete polishing

Progressively refining the concrete surface to produce a smooth, finished floor with a sheen that develops through the process.

Suited to

Where this is used

  • Warehouses, workshops and industrial floors
  • Showrooms, retail and commercial interiors
  • New-build floors and extensions
  • Exposed concrete floors in homes and living areas

Preparation

What we check first

Preparation is agreed before any finish is applied, because the result depends on the surface underneath.

  • The existing slab is checked for level, soundness and finish quality before any work is proposed.
  • Not every existing floor can achieve a particular polished finish; the achievable result is discussed against the actual surface.
  • Grinding may be proposed on its own, as preparation, or ahead of another finish such as a coating or screed.
  • Dust management and access arrangements are agreed before work starts.

Questions

Concrete Flooring & Polishing FAQs

Answers to the questions we hear most about this service.

What is the difference between grinding and polishing?
Grinding uses abrasive tooling to level, clean or prepare a concrete surface, often as groundwork for another finish. Polishing refines the surface through progressive stages to produce a smooth, finished floor. Some projects combine both.
Will my existing floor polish well?
It depends on the slab itself, including its hardness, the aggregate in the mix and its current condition. We cannot promise a particular result for every existing floor, so we assess the surface before advising on what is realistic.
Can grinding be done before a coating or screed?
Yes. Grinding is often carried out to prepare a surface so a coating or screed bonds correctly. Where that is the case, the preparation is included in the proposed scope for the finish.
Do you install new concrete floors as well?
Yes, we install new concrete floors as part of a project, in addition to grinding and polishing existing surfaces. What is suitable is discussed against your site and programme.
Can you work on existing floors?
In many cases, yes. The existing surface is assessed first, because the preparation needed and the finish that can be achieved depend on its condition. Some floors need repair or preparation before a new finish is applied.
