Floor Preparation & Renovation in Cape Town

Before choosing a new finish, start with the floor underneath it. We assess existing surfaces and agree on the preparation and renovation work needed for the proposed finish.

In short

Floor preparation and renovation is the groundwork that comes before a new finish. We assess existing surfaces in Cape Town and the Western Cape and agree the preparation and renovation work needed so the chosen finish can be applied correctly. This is often the first step in a larger flooring project.

Options

Finishes and systems

Each option suits different spaces and appearances. Gloss level, decorative effect and slip resistance are separate considerations, not interchangeable.

Existing-floor renovation

Reviewing and renewing a floor that is worn, uneven or previously treated, so it is ready for a new surface.

Surface preparation

Cleaning, correction and preparation of the substrate so a coating or screed bonds properly.

Preparation grinding

Mechanical grinding used to prepare a concrete surface. This is covered in more detail on the concrete grinding service.

Suited to

Where this is used

  • Older floors before a new coating or screed
  • Previously painted or coated surfaces
  • Uneven or damaged areas being repaired
  • Any project where the finish depends on the substrate

Preparation

What we check first

Preparation is agreed before any finish is applied, because the result depends on the surface underneath.

  • The existing finish and its condition are identified before work is proposed.
  • Visible problems such as flaking, unevenness or moisture are recorded and discussed.
  • Preparation is scoped on its own where the customer is still deciding on the final finish, or as part of a full project.
  • Where a job is for premises that stay in use, access and sequencing are agreed in advance.

Questions

Floor Preparation & Renovation FAQs

Answers to the questions we hear most about this service.

Why does preparation matter so much?
Most failures in flooring come from the surface beneath. Correct preparation means the chosen finish bonds properly and performs as intended, rather than sitting on top of a problem.
Do you do grinding as part of preparation?
Yes. Preparation grinding is often part of this work. It is explained in more detail on the concrete grinding and polishing service to avoid repeating the same information in two places.
Can you work while the premises stay in use?
Often that can be planned around. We discuss whether the premises remain in use and agree access and sequencing so the work can be carried out practically.
Do you do structural repairs or waterproofing?
We carry out floor preparation and renovation. We do not advertise structural repairs or waterproofing as part of this service, and we will tell you if your project needs something outside our scope.
Can you work on existing floors?
In many cases, yes. The existing surface is assessed first, because the preparation needed and the finish that can be achieved depend on its condition. Some floors need repair or preparation before a new finish is applied.
